WadNext Conference Recap
What a day at the WadNext Conference on Ameland! European policymakers, destinations, researchers, educational institutions, UNESCO partners and professionals from the tourism sector came together to exchange ideas, challenge existing perspectives and explore the future of tourism. Throughout the day, one question kept returning: how can tourism add value to a region while respecting the limits of nature and quality of life?
The Wadden area provided a fitting setting for that conversation. Here, the relationship between visitors, residents, entrepreneurs and nature is part of everyday life. It makes the islands a valuable place to explore what tourism can contribute to strong communities, a healthy natural environment and a resilient local economy.

Experience survey
To measure your experience and the impact perceived from the WadNext Conference, we would like to ask you to share your opinion. What was you biggest insight? How did you experience the programme? Maybe we can apply your thoughts on a possible next WadNext Conference, who knows...
This experience survey is part of ongoing research into visits to Friesland in the broadest sense. You will first be asked a few general questions, followed by questions specifically about your experience at the WadNext conference.
Share your opinionWadden Dash Board
During WadNext, the first version of the WaddenVisie Sustainability Dashboard was launched. Developed within the Interreg 6a project WaddenVisie, with Merk Fryslân as lead partner, the dashboard brings together available data from the Dutch and German Wadden region on topics such as nature, economy, society, culture, governance and visitor management. With 42 indicators, it helps entrepreneurs, policymakers and researchers better understand developments, identify where knowledge is still missing and make more informed choices for a sustainable future of the Wadden region.
Discover the dashboardGreen Destinations Awards
A special moment during WadNext was the presentation of the Green Destinations QualityCoast Awards to Ameland, Schiermonnikoog, Terschelling and Vlieland. All four islands completed an independent assessment based on 75 international criteria covering nature, climate, culture, liveability, the local economy and governance. Vlieland, Ameland and Terschelling received Gold status, while Schiermonnikoog was awarded Platinum.
What makes this recognition especially meaningful is the scale of the achievement. Four individual island municipalities, each with their own identity and challenges, have worked together towards a shared ambition for a sustainable and future proof Wadden region. Supported through the Regio Deal De Waddeneilanden, the islands joined forces throughout the certification process and continue to learn from and strengthen each other. The awards show what this cooperation can achieve across island boundaries.
Wad is Next?
The true impact of an event often starts after the final session. During WadNext, Friso Douwstra and Matthijs de Vries, the Regional Ministers of Fryslân, reflected on the value of bringing people together around sustainable tourism, circularity and hospitality. For Fryslân, that value is twofold: showing what is already happening here, and learning from others. “The value of an event like this is that we can show what we are working on, whilst learning from each other.”
But the real question comes afterwards: “What can I do differently tomorrow, in my own work?”. That is where WadNext became more than a congress. It became a starting point for new conversations, sharper ideas and practical steps. Not somewhere far away, but in the work people return to the very next day.
